PMI Certification Guide
PMI qualifications are “developed by practitioners for practitioners”.
Based on rigorous standards and ongoing research to meet the real-world needs of organizations, they are one the world’s most widely recognised suite of project management qualifications.
With over 1.4 million PMP® certification holders alone, the certifications are valid for any industry, anywhere in the world, and with any generic (or organization-specific) project management methodology.
PMI offers a wide range of project management qualifications and QA offers two of the most sought after – CAPM® and PMP®.
Project Management Professional (PMP)
PMP® has become the gold-standard in project management and demonstrates a project manager’s ability to lead teams and deliver projects in today’s fast-paced and dynamic workplace.
PMP® Pre-requisites
To be eligible for the PMP® exam, you must meet one of the following sets of requirements:
A. Four-Year Degree
- 36 months of experience leading projects within the past eight years
- 35 hours of project management education/training (satisfied by your 5-day PMP® course with QA) or CAPM® certification
OR
B. High School Diploma or Associate Degree
- 60 months of experience leading projects within the past eight years
- 35 hours of project management education/training or CAPM® certification
PMI states that successful candidates typically spend two to three months studying for the PMP® exam – this course provides an excellent foundation for your personal study.
PMP® Examination
Online; 180 multiple-choice type questions; 230 minutes; closed-book.
The PMP® exam incorporates questions on predictive, agile and hybrid delivery approaches and there is approximately a 50/50 split between “traditional” and “agile” approaches.
What you’ll learn
PMP® introduces a broad range of project management skills across three main domains:
- People: covers the interpersonal skills you need to effectively lead a project team and manage stakeholders
- Process: details the technical aspects of managing projects
- Business Environment: highlights the connection between projects and organizational strategy
Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM®)
CAPM® is PMI’s entry-level project management certification and demonstrates your understanding of the fundamental knowledge, terminology, and processes of effective project management.
CAPM® Pre-requisites
To be eligible for the CAPM® exam, you must meet the following set of requirements:
- Have a secondary degree, such as a high school diploma, GED (general educational development), or global equivalent –
AND
- Have at least 23 hours of project management education completed before the exam (satisfied by your 3-day CAPM® course with QA)
We would expect that successful candidates typically spend one to two months studying for the CAPM® exam – this course provides an excellent foundation for your personal study.
CAPM® Examination
Online; 150 multiple-choice type questions; 180 minutes; closed-book.

QA offers CAPM® and PMP® courses in both classroom and virtual formats.
Do PMI Qualifications expire?
PMP® certification holders can maintain their qualification by obtaining 60 professional development units (PDU) every three years.
CAPM® certification holders can maintain their qualification by obtaining 15 PDUs every three years.
PDUs can be obtained through ongoing education and giving back to the project management community. One PDU aligns with approximately one hour of education or giving back.
